Such a young baby elephant and so protected and cared for by his Mama and the herd. Lovely sighting... Wow leopard on a mission!! Those guttural sawing sounds leave us in no doubt. Amazing to see and also nice to see the Split Rock male again even if he was on the retreat. As always guys loved every moment. The fact that we all understand and realise the mother and the rest of of the herd are beyond capable of lifting the calf up onto the ridge, but mum wanted her little one to try for itself is awesome. There is a great lesson in independence and letting your infant learn or discover for themselves. My mother and I were just discussing this today, Mum is 52 and gave birth to my little sister 3 years ago, so she’s still adapting to life as a mum in a more matured age but she said to me in regard to my other siblings and I, “With you four, I was very overprotective and would run to comfort or assist you at every little bump, bang and obstacle, but with Everly, it’s so rewarding to stand back and let her do things for herself and see how excited she is once she’s accomplished it, but I’ll always know when to stand in and be there to catch her if she needs it”.
