Hanabiko, or as she was more fondly known as "Koko", was a female western lowland gorilla who was born on the 4th of July, 1971 and who died on the 19th of June, 2018. She was arguably one of the most, if not the most, famous gorilla to have lived due to her amazing work with doctor Francine Patterson, who was otherwise known as ‘Penny’. Francine helped teach Koko a variety of amazing skills, the most incredible being American Sign Language (ASL) which allowed the gorilla to communicate with humans like never before.
